Definitions

This section will be for any type of web definitions we may describe on our website.

Bounce Rate: Google defines bounce rate as “the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page.” An example if a visitor lands on your page and then goes to another website, the the bounce rate is 100%. If the visitor visits a few pages, then the bounce rate will drop. The lower the bounce rate, the better because that just means visitors are spending more times viewing your site rather than leaving after seeing the first page.

Alexa.com – Free Web Traffic Metrics

Alexa.com provides free web traffic metrics, demographics, sites linked in and other web analytics and stats.

Here are some basic steps on how to use Alexa.com.

Alexa.com URL lookup

Once you arrive to the site, type the URL of your website or any other website you are interested in checking. If you just created your website, it may take some time before Alexa starts giving results. I not only use this website for tracking my own results but I also check competitors websites to see how they are ranked, websites linked to them and the type of keywords that have been successful for them

Alexa Web Analytics

Once the website populates, there are several options you can choose from such as “Traffic Stats”, “Search Analytics”, “Audience”, etc. The one example I use here is “Search Analytics”. As you can see in the above picture, it gives you the top keywords that drove traffic to this particular website. The stats is updated monthly, so it is good to check it once a month if you are interested in seeing what keywords are successful in driving traffic to a particular website.

Alexa Web Analytics

After viewing the top keywords, if you scroll down further you can also see “Search Terms”. This can also be helpful with using specific keywords as they also help in driving traffic. This section shows “Search Terms with a High Web-Wide Ranking Driving Traffic”.

Alexa Sites Linked in

As mentioned before you can also check what sites are linked to this particular website. With a new website, your stats will most likely show zero. What I usually do is check a competitors website such as “www.myblog.com”. If I see a good number like above, then I check it out to see what websites are linked. You may find some good websites such as web directories or web portals which you can use to add your link to the website. To not only increase traffic but also your website’s visibility on search engines, it is always good to build link exchanges to as many websites as possible.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Wikipedia defines Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as:

“the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.”

Importance of Meta Tags

What is a Meta Tag?

Mega Tags are placed in the header section of your website. They contain information such as title, description, and keywords that can help your visibility in search engines and can also help you move up in rank. These tags also help play a role in Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Here is an example of how mega tags look like:
Example of a Meta Tag

<HEAD>
<TITLE>Example of a Mega Tag</TITLE>
<META NAME=”description” CONTENT=”Example of a Meta Tag”>
<META NAME=”keywords” CONTENT=”meta,meta tag, meta tags, tag, search engine, SEO”>
</HEAD>

If you need assistance with creating these meta tags, www.addme.com offers a free meta tag creator.

How to Submit Your Website to Search Engines?

There are several ways to submit your website to search engines but the easiest way is to do it for free.

The 2 biggest search engines out there are Google and Yahoo.  You can start off by submitting your website to them.

Google – http://www.google.com/addurl
Yahoo – http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit

Other notable search engines:
MSN – http://www.msn.com
DMOZ (submission can be a little confusion) – http://www.dmoz.org

Multiple search engine submissions (free third-party tools)
Submit Express – http://www.submitexpress.com/submit.html
Addme – http://www.addme.com

You can also Google “add url” and find other websites and search engines to submit it. It can get redundant and repetitive but what I do is copy what you need in an application like MS Word or Notepad and you can copy and paste the information as you go along.
